Stanford Scientists have created an assay in which they use heart muscle cells made from stem cells to test the toxicity of commonly used chemotherapy drugs called tyrosine kinase inhibitors used for the treatment of many types of cancers. These drugs could have severe and sometimes fatal side effects and this assay will help determine their likelihood of causing lasting heart damage in patients before they are administered to the patients.

Dr. Ayati will be talking about Strategies to Improve your Sleep on Thursday June 15th at 10:30 AM in Campbell Library. CNN has published an article about sexual and physical abuse of the elderly in nursing homes and elderly care facilities across the US: "Sick, Dying and Raped in America's Nursing Homes" "HOW SAFE ARE YOUR ELDERLY LOVED ONES? There’s no way to know about abuse that goes unreported. But you can look up the name of a nursing home in federal inspection data and see whether it has been cited for sexual abuse or other issues in the past three years. Here's how:
Dr. Ayati, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at Stanfornd university School of Medicine and Director of Geriatric Concierge Center will be speaking at the Stanford Geriatric Care Series on Thursday Feb 16th. Researchers have found a modest link between levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (vitamin D) and sex hormones in men and women aged 45 to 84. Lower levels of vitamin D were associated with lower levels of sex-hormone–binding globulin (SHBG) and higher levels of free testosterone in men and women and lower levels of estradiol and higher levels of dehydroepandrosterone (DHEA) in women. Further studies are needed to determine whether treating vitamin D deficiency can improve the low testosterone state.
In a study researchers found that video chats such as Skype, between dementia patients in nursing homes and their family members, combining visual with auditory sensory inputs, reduce agitated behaviors in dementia patients. Telephone conversations involving auditory inputs alone also decreased agitated behaviors in dementia patients but to a much lesser extent. The best way to provide your body with all the necessary nutients it requires is to eat a healthy balanced diet. Always talk to your physician before taking any over the counter supplements/vitamins/antioxidants. They are not regulated by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) and the manufactureres do not have to enforce their efficacy and safety. Furthermore, vitamin supplements can cause irreversible physiological damages including cancer. Antioxidants can decrease the supply of free radicals in our system and leave the body helpless against some infections. Supplements can interact with your existing medications and cause harm. There are hundreds of mitochondria per cell. Mitochondia is an organell which produces most of the chemical energy within a cell, necessary for its normal function. This organell carries its own small circular DNA, called mtDNA. mtDNA has limited repair abilities, and therefore the levels of mutant mtDNA increase as we age. When a critical level of mutant mtDNA is reached, cells become nonfunctional and die. This process contributes to aging as well as to degenerative diseases of aging such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and sarcopenia (muscle loss). Researchers are looking into reducing the amount of mutant mtDNA in cells in order to slow or reverse aging.
Researchers have found that the presence of certain type of bacteria in human intestines can result in the development of Parkinson's disease. It is beleived that these bacteria are releasing chemicals that over-activate parts of the brain, leading to neurodegenerative damage. Scientists hope to develop drugs or probiotics that work in the digestive system in order to cure/prevent the disease.
